There’s no question that this breathtaking view of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in Tioga County represents some of the most beautiful scenery that the Keystone State has to offer. It’s cherished by local residents and tourists alike.

But there’s a problem. Because virtually all of this land is owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it’s tax-exempt. With counties, school districts and municipalities depending on the real estate tax to generate revenue for essential services, the presence of so much tax-exempt state land has gutted the local tax base in many regions.

Private property owners are forced to make up the difference, carrying a tax burden that is increasingly burdensome and unfair. The Pennsylvania State Land Tax Fairness Coalition is calling on the state legislature to pass two bills that would bring some relief.
